Michael Lewis was born and raised in Detroit and has become one of the metro area's busiest and most respected attorneys since becoming licensed in 1998. Mr. Lewis' specialty is litigating and trying complex civil suits such as catastrophic first and third party injury, wrongful death, governmental torts, 42 USC § 1983 and complicated insurance coverage and commercial general liability claims. His expertise in policy drafting, rescission and cancellation allows Mr. Lewis to partner with clients to not only defend claims but reduce them through improvement of written insurance products and claim handling procedures. Mr. Lewis frequently speaks at seminars for attorneys and insurance professionals and was a featured speaker at the 2005 and 2006 conferences of the Insurance Institute of Michigan, the main lobbying body for Michigan's insurance industry. Mr. Lewis is a leading trial attorney with an impressive record in courts throughout the metro area.
Mr. Lewis is an approved circuit court case evaluator and is frequently hired by colleagues to help resolve disputes through binding arbitration. He practices throughout Michigan and is admitted to practice in the United States District Courts for the Eastern and Western Districts of Michigan. Mr. Lewis is a fellow of the Oakland County Bar Foundation and a member of the Insurance Institute of Michigan, Michigan Defense Trial Counsel, the Negligence Section of the State Bar of Michigan and the Defense Research Institute.
Mr. Lewis graduated magna cum laude in 1994 from Wayne State University, where he honed oral advocacy skills as a member of Wayne State's Forensics and Speech Team. During his time at Wayne State, Mr. Lewis was a paid researcher for United States District Court Judge Avern Cohn. Mr. Lewis then went on to study at the University of Detroit Mercy School of Law, where he earned is J.D. in 1998 and was champion of the University's annual moot court competition. Mr. Lewis is a former recipient of the Wade McCree Award, an academic scholarship memorializing the former solicitor general of the United States. Mr. Lewis lives in Birmingham with his wife, Kristin, and son, John.
