As a shareholder of Zausmer, Kaufman, August, Caldwell & Tayler, Gary K. August serves many high profile clients
in cases involving construction law, general litigation, securities litigation and insurance coverage.
Mr. August is recognized by his clients and peers for his tireless work ethic, and his knowledgeable
and creative approach to the litigation process. Graduating cum laude from Northwestern University School
of Law in Chicago, Mr. August served as associate editor of the Northwestern University Law Review and won
Northwestern's Julius H. Minor Moot Court Competition.
Aggressively recruited out of law school, Mr. August chose to return home to practice in Michigan at
Honigman, Miller, Schwartz and Cohn until 1996 when he joined ZKACT. In his role at ZKACT, Mr. August
has been able to fulfill his ambition of creating his own sophisticated litigation practice within a
smaller firm, which could better deliver the personalized services his clients sought. Mr. August
aggressively recruits young lawyers from the nation's finest law schools to join the firm's already
impressive roster of attorneys. As a result, Mr. August has not only established himself as one of
Michigan's most highly-regarded litigators, but has also built ZKACT as a law firm which is recognized
for its intellectual depth, and ability to handle the most complicated legal matters.
Some of Mr. August's accomplishments include acting as lead litigation counsel in some of the largest construction projects in Michigan, including Northwest Airlines' construction of the $1.2 billion Edward H. McNamara Terminal at the Detroit Metropolitan Airport. Mr. August also represents other large corporations and municipalities. Mr. August also serves as a member of the Residential Builders' and Maintenance and Alteration Contractors' Board since his 2007 appointment by then Governor Jennifer Granholm.
Mr. August has received many honors and recognitions including being named a Michigan Super Lawyer
every year since the honor was created in 2006, DBusiness Top Lawyers for 2010, Martindale-Hubbell's
AV (highest) Peer Review Rating, and being selected as one of Michigan Lawyers Weekly's Leaders in the
Law 2011. Mr. August also obtained Michigan Lawyers Weekly’s largest reported settlement for the
entire State of Michigan for 2010 as a result of his work for the City of Dearborn on its combined
sewer overflow project.
Through personal service and results, Mr. August has developed a practice with the
ability to meet the needs of the largest corporation or the smallest individual client.
